Recently Posted: Nature’s Turtle Nursery: Secrets from the Nest

Grade: Laura Hewett
Online: Aaron Bell
THE BRIEF: Picture

Create a warm and sunny feel that compliments the tropical location. Even out the infrared footage and balance the sunrise/ sunset footage across the documentary.

THE METHOD

This documentary was shot over many months on a variety of cameras with a lot of night shoots using infrared head torches so as not to disturb the turtles. There were also many underwater shoots recorded on various cameras. Laura used BaseLight 5 to balance all of the cameras and times of day for consistency with particular focus on the footage shot over several hours where the light changed.

The night shoots under infrared light were noisy and very magenta, which Laura reduced by using a de-noising tool within BaseLight and grading out the strong magenta to a more warm, comfortable orange/red hue.

For deep water footage a rich turquoise tone was decided upon, which was maintained throughout the underwater shots and the high level drone shots. GFX and effects in the timeline were created by Aaron with Boris Continuum and our Avid Symphony V8.8.5 provided the render power needed for such a complex grade.

Audio: Nick Handley & Cecile Janet

THE BRIEF: Sound

Build a lush, multi-textured atmosphere of sound to bring alive the environment and wildlife on the Costa Rican coastline, and maintain the character of the turtles by adding details to their movements throughout.

THE METHOD

Nick & Cecile worked in ProTools version 12.5 and made extensive use of the Izotope range of plugins to clean up dialogue and location recording.

The team were given the rare opportunity to handle recordings of the turtle eggs vocalising from inside the nest and assist the research scientists by removing interfering background noise. This rendered the turtle sound much clearer and more audible for their analysis.

Everything other than dialogue and the nest recordings was mute so layers of sound effects and foley were built in throughout to create a rich sound bed that reflected the surroundings.

The Investigator: A British Crime Story

Grade Brief: The Production wanted a really high end grade and instructed Colourist Laura Hewett to reference ‘Mindhunter' for grading style in the drama recon. Laura was also asked to emphasise the difference between the drama and the present day footage clearly through the use of colour and tone. The Directors wanted the drama to swing towards warm highlights and green/blue in the blacks.

Method: Laura followed this brief using ‘tobacco’ tones and grim sickly green/yellows for the 60s – 80s flashbacks to reflect the era. She softened the highlights to create a more low lit appearance which contrasted yet complimented the sharper, colder present day footage.

Audio brief: The Directors asked Dubbing Mixers Nick Handley and Cecile Janet to emphasise the contrast between the investigative sections with Mark Williams Thomas and the jumps back in time with the drama recon. They wanted to use music and atmos to create rich sound beds that suit the eras on screen while remaining realistic and sensitive to the content.

Method: Nick and Cecile hit the brief in a number of ways, paying particular attention to eerie, atmospheric and sometimes dark sound effects to reflect the mood. They also used reverb frequently on the dramatized sequences to create an uncomfortable listening experience which complimented the content. They balanced this by maintaining realism in the presenter-led sections which was really complimented by the composer Lorne Balfe. They wove the music, effects and atmos together to create a restless overall feel that stayed true to the subject matter.
